Audiences are loving Between the Clouds.

The Border Mail has given the show a glowing review saying “the HotHouse 2015 Studio Ensemble production makes theatre relevant and fresh to a new audience.

Sydney-based writer Julia-Rose Lewis has produced a wonderfully constructed script which resonates with a honest, modern dialogue perfectly executed by these budding Border actors.”

“Between the Clouds’ is a brilliantly written, directed and performed new play. Honest and relevant. Please see it.”

“My 13 year old daughter and I saw Between the Clouds last Friday evening.
Both of us thoroughly enjoyed it. Not what either of us expected. The bittersweet story line was quite touching and delivered by young actors that are so talented! I was very impressed and wish all involved every future success.”

Saw it – loved it – they did such a great job”

Between the Clouds – Note from the Creatives

Theatre has a lot of similarities with the stuff we put online. It’s got something ephemeral about it- once you put it out there, there’s no getting it back. It’s sharing something that’s got a bit of yourself in it whether you like it or not. And it’s making an offer of some kind- of happiness, of celebration, of sadness, of forgiveness, of honesty and so much more, all of which we hope to offer people who come to see Between the Clouds.

In a lot of conversations we often have about the online sphere we focus on the disconnect technology creates from the ‘real world’. But this is not what this play is about. What it might be about though is the way that technology can bring us closer together, for better or for worse. It’s about the persona’s we create to hide behind in our lives, the intimacy of a 2am messenger chat and the madness that’s invoked when we don’t hear back from someone when we’ve poured our heart out. There is simultaneously something very sweet and something very sinister about this kind of communication and it’s at this intersection that these stories spill from.

This show has been incubating for over 12 months now. Firstly, we must thank Jon Halpin for programming it and his support while he was Artistic Director of HotHouse. It’s had invaluable input from the 2014 HotHouse ensemble and it wouldn’t be what it is without the 2015 HotHouse ensemble not only for their great performances but their insight, their stories and their amazing energy all of which have become embedded in the play. This process has very much been one of collaboration and conversation between writer, director, actor, dramaturg, designer, performers, crew and now- audience.

The action of sharing something with someone- online or in real life, is not one without risk. You’ve put something out there and the time between that and the moment you get a response can be almost unbearable. We don’t know what you’re going to say back but we hope that we’ve offered something that you can take home.
