HotHouse Theatre presents a re:group performance collective production

Streaming killed the video store. And that’s not all we lost…….

An immediate hit with critics and audiences, COIL is one of those rare productions – gobsmacklingly clever in its execution whilst still being funny, warm hearted and deeply resonant.

Blurring the boundaries of theatre and cinema, this innovative new work draws on our collective memories to pay tribute to the glory days of the video store and the communities we made within them.

COIL reflects upon the joys, perils and pitfalls of nostalgia, and how we grapple with goodbyes to move on.

Creating new work at the very edge of video technology and live performance, re:group mash theatre and movie-making together to create ‘live cinema’. Inspired by the highs and lows of pop culture, re:group aim to turn typically comfortable and passive viewing experiences into something immersive, irreverent and inherently live.

Don’t miss this playful, one-of-a-kind, live cinema experience.

Use custom coded video-DJing technology to create an entire film cast from a solo performer.

The Coil video design allows one actor to perform multiple characters in their own film. In this workshop the participants will write and perform their own film, playing all the roles. The film will be deconstructed and then put back on stage in the form of a live film. We write a short script, storyboard it, put everything into a spreadsheet and then the computer program creates the show for you.

The workshop is open to artists and performers from all backgrounds. No experience necessary, just a love of theatre, film or both. The workshop will be led by 1 (or more) members of the collective.

About re:group performance collective
re:group are a group of artists based between Hobart, Wollongong and Sydney, Australia. Inspired by the highs and lows of pop culture, we mash theatre and film together to create live cinema performances. Our development process involves rigorously studying genre-specific film language, storytelling and cinematography techniques to make movies for the stage. We storyboard each scene, identifying the framing and camera placement, and place this form within the constraints of live theatre. The aim of our work is to turn the typically comfortable, nostalgic and passive movie-going experience into something immersive, irreverent, sweaty and live, and ironic and sincere in equal measure.
