This year, HotHouse Theatre celebrates it’s 25th Anniversary – 25 Seasons of exceptional theatre on the border – a magnificent milestone that acknowledges the deep roots the company has made in sharing the stories of Albury Wodonga.
HotHouse began with an audacious goal – to completely reimagine the way in which a regional theatre company could operate. It took on 12 Artistic Directors from across the country and asked them to dream of new possibilities. We stand on the shoulders of our ground-breaking Artistic Directorate and scores of alumni staff and artists, proud to present a season of five main stage productions with three new works from HotHouse plus two new independent works. All made right here by the exceptional artists of this region.
This season we are telling Our Stories, Our Way.
It is a season of World Premieres and we couldn’t be more proud. We open with This is Your City – a reimagining of the classic 1980s board game of the same name. Audiences become players and families become teams as we race around the city in a 1980s-style car rally.
We step bravely into the world of Chase and come face to face with our hidden selves. We stand in the shoes of our new migrant brothers and sisters in Them, as we wrestle with the complexities and risks of staying put or leaving home. We reflect deeply about whose Country we stand on in Bungambrawatha, a new work by the revitalised Black Border Theatre ensemble. And we finish the year with our greatest legacy story of the 20th century. All the Shining Lights is our 2022 HotHouse commission, telling the incredible, uplifting story of the 1934 Uiver Rescue.
In addition to our annual subscription season, we will premiere two new Celsius: Independent Theatre productions, debut a new site-specific work at Wodonga’s Hyphen Gallery created by our Industry Co:Lab emerging artists, and welcome a host of artists from around the country making new works at our recently launched GreenHouse: National Artist Residency. 2022 will be a year-long story of our 25 Seasons – look out for alumni interviews, artist podcasts, take a socials trip down memory lane and join us in celebrating this extraordinary milestone at four very special events throughout the year, reflecting on the productions and programs that shaped the company over the past 25 years.
We invite you to be audacious and become a 25 Seasons subscriber.
It will be a year to remember.
