Welcome to 2023 —
a Season of Awakenings.

The theatre has the joyous capacity to awaken our senses, dive into our soul and lift up our spirits.

Join us as we take the leap into the heart and soul of Australia with a scintillating new season featuring three world premieres, a divine nostalgia trip and a West End smash!

We open the season with a special HotHouse commission – the world premiere of Her by Kerryn Beatty. A poetic and visual feast, Her sings a call to women everywhere to reclaim their identity and stand in their truth. Celebrate International Women’s Day with us at Her in March.

Suzie Miller’s extraordinary tour de force, Prima Facie finally arrives on the border in April. Now a West End hit, this original production continues to claw at the injustices within our legal system asking, is it time to tear it down and start again?

July sees the arrival of Coil by re:group performance collective – an epic theatrical and cinematic mash-up about friendship and nostalgia, set in an old school video store. With a movie made live each night, Coil is joyous, outrageous and ingenious; and the story, healing.

Our landmark commission, Unprecedented by Campion Decent, reaches its world premiere at the Butter Factory Theatre in August, before setting off on a regional tour across NSW and Victoria.

A companion piece to Embers, this profound new work reflects on the 2019/20 Bushfire season and the rapid increase of natural disasters.

It revives our cultural memory, puts the urgent conversations we need to have back on the table; and creates space to process our relationship to fire and the environment, before the next season is upon us.

We finish our season with the world premiere of Gadigal Gal by Gadigal Elder, Graham Simms aka Nana Miss Koori. A night of power, pride and glitter awaits as we settle in for a show to remember.

As we emerge out of the great disruption, we recognise a lot has changed in the world. Systems have been broken, our assumptions have been challenged, our identity evolving. In order to undertake true transformation, we need to see and accept the world as it is, face reality, own it and undertake the work to do and be better.

We awaken our spirit, dismantle old systems, let go of the past, face the truth and embrace our identity. This is the journey of our Season.

If you love adventuring with us, we can’t wait to journey with you again, and if you haven’t been to HotHouse before, then awaken yourself to something new and join us in Season 2023!
